Dr. Debal Deb gave up his professorship in Berkeley, California to come to his homeland India and take care of the quickly vanishing varieties of rice. Rice varieties in India have decreased from roughly one hundred thousand to seven thousand in the last fifty years.
Deb founded Basudha, a rice conservation farm in India where he has created a living seed bank of 1,400 rare indigenous varieties. His collection boasts of resiliency, with most varieties withstanding drought and flooding, strong changes of weather and soil, and with multiple cultural and medicinal properties.
